Every driver and passenger that is lucky enough to travel in the OUTBACK feels safer, knowing that OUTBACK has been awarded the maximum five-star crashworthiness rating for occupant safety from the respected and independent Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP)(1). This has a lot to do with innovative advancements that we’ve made an integral part of the OUTBACK. Advancements such as the newly designed high-strength front seat frames and energy absorbing headrests that provide enhanced protection against whiplash in heavy rear-end collisions. Plus all rear seatbelts come with Automatic Emergency Locking Retractors and the front seatbelts feature pretensions that hold you securely in place in an accident.

The drivetrain of your Subaru is perfectly symmetrical, with the engine, transmission and propeller shaft and rear differential all arranged in a straight line. The result is ideal weight distribution, a low centre of gravity and perfect balance, providing you with sure-footed control and smooth, receptive handling.

The new OUTBACK is powered by a Horizontally opposed Boxer 4 cylinder petrol engine in the 2.5 model, a Horizontally opposed Boxer 6 cylinder, petrol engine in the 3.6 model, and a Turbocharged horizontally opposed Boxer 4 cylinder diesel engine in the 2.0 diesel model. Front suspension is McPherson strut type independent suspension with rear being Self-leveling double wishbone independent. Brakes are of course extremely responsive and effective and are 4-channel, 4-sensor ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution.

Safety features on the OUTBACK are unbelievable and have to be the best in the industry. Features such as Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (SAWD), Vehicle Dynamics Control system (VDC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), 4 wheel disc brakes, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Electronic Throttle Control system (ETC), Electronic parking brake with hill hold switch, Rear View reverse camera (on certain models), and Self Leveling Rear Suspension are available as standard across all models.
